Calbers explores how classical letterforms can emerge from a geometric kit of parts. Its name brings together Caslon and Albers, reflecting the connection between its traditional structure and the modular experiments of Josef Albers.

Triangles, circles, rectangles and squares form the basis of the design, with a few more freely drawn shapes accommodating the complexity of the Latin alphabet. Its stencil construction keeps the assembly visible, making the relationships between the pieces part of each letter’s character. Originally conceived as a teaching exercise, Calbers introduced students to designing with modules and exploring the structures shared by different letters. That educational starting point gives the typeface a distinctive visual logic, with familiar forms assembled from repeated elements. Calbers lends itself to luxury cosmetics, packaging and prominent headlines where typography becomes a central graphic feature. Set large and given space, its geometric components invite a closer look and give short words a sculptural presence.
